Miscellaneous

At the moment, all of my Aldora writings, notes, etc., are hardcopy.  One of these days I will start typing it up.  Until then, how about a little teaser?

(By the by, "TCF" stands for "Terran Colonization Fleet".)

Regret

copyright 2004 Amie Marie Holloway

"Niki, do you ever regret your family's decision to come on this voyage?"

"Sometimes.  But then I think of the life I would have had if we stayed.  What of you Arianna?  You are here alone.  Do you regret it?"

"Almost everyday.  I did it to spite my parents, to show them it was my life and I would do what I wanted with it."

"You committed the rest of your life to the Aldora just to spite your parents?  Good lord Ari--what did they do that was so terrible?"

"Nothing really.  They were insisting I attend this university, study for that career.  If they hadn't been so...so...forceful about it, I probably would be working at some med-search or bio-manufacturing company by now.  But they wouldn't listen to my plans--or at least I thought so at the time.  I was 19, what did I know?  'The Real World' wasn't in the curriculum at Masar.  So instead, I signed on with the Aldora's tech crew.  And here I am."

"And here you are.  But why the Aldora?  Why not lose yourself on one of the in-system colonies?  It can't be that hard to make a living out there.  Especially as a crew tech."

"You don't understand--I wasn't thinking about 'making a living'.  I thought I was making a life.  Like I said, I was 19.  I didn't know what I was getting into.  I'm surprised I made it through the screening.  At least here I can still learn another function.  I really don't see myself still changing light bulbs when I'm 65."

"Oh, yeah--you'll have made it up to hydro maintenance by then."
